Chief of State
Overlap Role + acts as the nations symbolic leader, performing ceremonial duties and enhancing the president´s image and authority to promote national unity.
Commander in Chief
Foreign Role + top commander of all U.S. military branches, deciding when to send troops into battle and setting military strategy, with advice from advisers, though only Congress can declare war.
Chief Diplomat
Foreign Role + shapes and administers foreign policy, negotiates treaties, appoints ambassadors, and receives ambassadors from other countries.
Chief Economist
Domestic Role + influences economy by shaping the federal budget, setting regulatory policies for businesses, and appointing Federal Reserve Board members who manage economic policy.
Chief Executive
President appoints heads of federal agencies and cabinet secretaries, ensuring that laws are faithfully executed and determining how the bureaucracy implements and emphasizes these laws.
Party Leader
Domestic Role + chief of a major political party is like a symbol for its members and has power by choosing the national party leader and raising funds.
FORMAL Power - Impeachment
House can impeach the President for serious offenses, Senate then hold a trial, Needing two- thirds majority to convict and possibly remove President from office.
FORMAL power - Senate Approval for Treaty
Senate must agree to Treaties, ambassadors and judges appointed by the president
Informal checks on Presidential power
Informal Power - Public Opinion
People expressing their views by voting in elections, polls conducted by White House and news agencies can influence presidential decisions. President Johnson did not seeking re- re-election because people didn’t like him due to the Vietnam War.
Informal power - The Media
New outlets have significant power by selecting which stories to cover reporting facts, and expressing opinions. For instance, Wood Ward and Bernstein´s reporting on Watergate led to President Nixon’s registration.)
Informal power Partisan Politics
The opposition party, (like Mitch McConnell´s actions regarding President Obama´s Supreme Court nominee, critiques and challenges) the president’s policies and decisions.
Informal power - Congressional Investigations
Congressional committees conduct public investigation, to oversee the executive branch and ensure accountability. (January 6th Capitol attack)
Informal power - Interest groups and Non-Government Organizations (NGO)
These groups influence and check the president’s power by endorsing or opposing candidates and contributing money to campaigns (Like the NRA endorsing President Trump.)
