Democracy
A system of government where people have the power to determine how they will be ruled (governed).
Representative Democracy
A system of government where a representative is elected by the people to make laws on their behalf.
Constitutional Monarchy
A system of government where a king/queen is the Head of State whose power is bound by the Constitution (a set of laws).
Westminster system
A form of parliamentary government originating in the UK. (Bicameral parliament – 2 Houses)

What are 2 roles of the House of Representatives?
- Represent the interests of the people in their electorate to put forth bills on their behalf.
- Opposition members in Parliament (during parliament debates) have to analyse and raise questions about bills put forth by ruling party members.
What are 2 roles of the Senate?
- To fairly represent the interests of all the states and territories irrespective of population.
- To act as a house of review for bills proposed by the Lower House.
Define the Australian Constitution.
It is a set of rule that dictates how the states and territories in Australia are to be governed and outlines the legislative, executive and judicial functions of the government of the Commonwealth of Australia.
Define Separations of Powers.
It occurs where Legislative, Executive, and Judicial functions must be kept separate in order to prevent bias and corruption in the government.
