Citizenship
Understanding the rights of citizens and duties, responsibilities and actions that go along with these rights.
Citizen
An official member of a country who has met the requirements of citizenship and is entitled to its protection, rights and privileges.
Rights
Legal or natural privileges to have, say, or do something, which may or may not be based in law, but are protected by the law.
Responsibilities
The task duties that citizens are required or expected to carry out,as active expressions of their membership within a large community (ex. Obeying the law)
Active Citizenship
Someone who is informed about social issues and engaged in working to improve his or her community, province, or country.
Human Rights
Rights believed to belong to every person from birth; they do not come from the laws of any specific society. Examples: Right to life, the right to freedom from torture, right to education, freedom from slavery.
Legal Rights
The rights given to a person by a legal system; legal rights are protected by the laws of a country. They reflect a society’s customs and values.
Equal rights
The principle that all citizens should share and are entitled to the exact same rights. Ex. Right to protest, free speech, health care, not to be discriminated against.
Group rights
The rights held by a group (not by the individual members of the group). They share common features which are unchangeable.
