why was the city dionysia founded

A

the eleutherae came to athens seeking citizenship- they offered a statue of dionysis but the Atheneans rejected it. the atheneans either lost their gentals or they became infected. to beg for dionysus’ forgiveness they accepted the statue and set up the festival
