City Streets Flashcards
What is the difference between a zebra, toucan and pelican crossing?
A zebra crossing gives way to pedestrians without any traffic lights.
A pelican crossing is a pedestrian light controlled crossing - one where the pedestrian presses a button to make the traffic stop.
A toucan crossing is a crossing where cyclists and pedestrians can cross together.
What should you not do on a box junction? (A yellow hatched squared)
You cannot stop on a box junction and can only drive onto it once the exit from it is clear.
You’re at the front of the traffic waiting to turn right into a side road. Why should you check your right mirror just before turning?
To check for overtaking cars.
How do you know what the speed limit is on a road where there are no speed limit signs but you can see street lights?
30 mph.
Who has priority when traffic lights are out of order?
Nobody
When overtaking a cyclist on a 30 mph road, how much space should you leave?
As much as you would when overtaking a car.
Where would you see a contraflow bus lane?
On a one way street.
How should you signal if you’re going straight ahead at a roundabout?
Signal left just after you pass the exit before the one you’re going to take.
When may you stop on an urban clear way?
To set down and pick up passengers.
You’re in a line of traffic. What action should you take if the driver behind is following very closely?
Slow down, gradually increasing the gap between you and the vehicle in front.
You’re driving in busy traffic. You want to pull up just after a junction on the left. When should you signal?
As you’re passing or just after the junction.
Other than direction indicators, how can you give signals to other road users?
By using brake lights.
What should you do if you can’t see clearly behind when reversing?
Ask someone to guide you.
What should you do before making a U-turn?
Look over your shoulder for a final check.
What must you do when the amber light is flashing at a pelican crossing?
Give way to pedestrians already on the crossing.
