Citric acid cycle Flashcards
What happens to pyruvate before it can enter the citric acid cycle? What is the waste product?
It is broken down to Acetyl CoA by oxidative decarboxylation.
Waste product is carbon dioxide
What is the enzyme involved in the break down of pyruvate Where is it located?
Pyruvate dehydrogenase, it is located in the mitochondrial matrix
How many NADH are produced in the oxidation of pyruvate?
Per pyruvate
Per glucose
1 NADH per pyruvate molecule
2 NADH per glucose molecule
What does acetyl coA do?
It feeds two carbon units in to the citric acid cycle.
This turns the 4 carbon oxaloacetate in to a 6 carbon citric acid
Coenzyme A is an activated carrier molecule. What 3 things does it carry?
- Acetyl groups
- Energy (bonds with additional phosphate)
- Electrons (H)
Where does the citric acid cycle take place?
In the mitochondrial matrix
What does ONE TURN of the citric acid cycle generate?
3 NADH
1 FADH2
1 ATP
What does ONE GLUCOSE molecule generate from the citric acid cycle?
6 NADH
2FADH2
2ATP
Waste product of citric acid cycle?
CO2
Which stages produce NADH?
3 4 and 8
Which stage produces FADH2?
6
Where is ATP made?
stage 5
What is made and converted in to ATP in TCA?
GTP
