What is democracy?
A system of government where society have a say in how the country’s run.
What is dictatorship?
A system of government that is ruled by one person.
What is a liberal democracy?
A form of democracy where citizens are protected from excessive government power.
What is a direct democracy?
It is a form of democracy where those involved directly determine the outcome.
What is representative democracy?
A form of democracy where groups of citizens elect a person or persons to represent their views.
What are four British values?
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Tolerance
What are rights?
The moral and legal protections all people in our society enjoy equally.
What are responsibilities?
Duties that all citizens have.
How is the monarch selected?
By a system of hereditary (passed on by birthright) power,which is passed down a family line.
How are the Lords in the House of Lords selected?
By the Prime Minister and appointed by the Queen.
How are MP’s in the House of Commons selected?
They are voted in and represent everyone in a local constituency.
What are the three things that make up parliament?
- The monarch
- House of Commons
- House of Lords
What does being held accountable mean?
Being held responsible for your actions and their consequences.
What is devolution?
The transfer of power from a larger to a smaller body.
What is an example of devolution?
UK parliament giving Scotland power over their educational system.
What is veto?
The power to over rule others.
What does EVEL mean?
English votes for English laws.
What is the idea of EVEL?
That only English MP’s should be able to vote for laws that affect only England.
What is a government?
A government is formed by the party that gets the majority of votes/seats.
What is a coalition?
A coalition government is when a party doesn’t win the majority seats (more than half), and forms a government with another party.
Who can stand for local election?
-Must be at least 18 years old and a British/Commonwealth or EU citizen.
-And must be at least 1 of these:
A registered voter for the area you wish to stand, lived in the local council for at least 12 months, worked in the local council for at least 12 months.
Who can’t stand for local election (disqualified)?
- If you are employed by the local council in another role.
- If you are currently bankrupt
- If you have been sentenced 3 months or more in prison in the past 5 years.
- If you have been disqualified under the Representation of the people Act 1983.
What is the First Past the Post voting system?
It’s is winner takes all, whoever gains the most votes in a constituency is elected to be their MP.
What is minority rule?
A government who does not have the majority of the vote.
What are safe seats?
Seats that are predicted and rarely change from a party.
What are marginal seats?
Seats that could be for anyone, when it’s not always clear who’s going to get them.
What is bicameral?
A legislative body that has two chambers.
What is the judiciary?
Judges and the court system.
What is parliament?
(The legislates), the House of Commons and House of Lords.
What is the Executive?
The Prime Minister and ministers.
What is an MP?
A person who is elected into parliament (The House of Commons), who represent peoples beliefs.
What is market economy?
A national economy where most of it is run by the private sector.
What is command economy?
A national economy where it’s is controlled by the government.
What is national debt?
When a country needs to pay back another country or a bank.
What is GDP?
Gross domestic product is the total value of everything produced by all the people and companies in the country.
What is taxation?
The process the government uses to gain money from the public (people and businesses).
