What are urban areas called in Ontario?
They’re called municipalities
Are there rules about what makes a town or city in Ontario?
No, if you call yourself a city, you are one
(Dryden, Ontario is a city with less than 8k and Oakville, Ontario with over 200k calls itself a town)
Does municipality tell you a lot about the kind of city or area it is?
No, Toronto has a population of 3 million and Dryden has population of 8k, both are cities
What does Lewis Mumford think a city is?
The city is a related collection of primary groups and purposive associations.
1st: Family and neighbourhoods (common to all communities)
2nd: especially characteristics of city life
What does purposive mean?
having, serving, or done with a purpose.
What causes someone to organize a purposive association?
Why are cities important?
-Kids have a better education
-More money within cities
-More resources
What are Mumfords primary groups?
-Families
-Neighbourhoods
-Organizations without legal structure
What are Mumfords purposive associations?
-Churches
-Bars
(combines economic resources within a legal framework)
