Q

Why do we cite?

A

The main objective of citations is to identify information that is from others, to differentiate it from our own contributions, but we also cite to:

  • Recognize the work of the authors from whom we take ideas, data or information
  • Give credibility to our job, using the authority of the works we use
  • Protect ourselves from possible mistakes and inaccuracies, indication the source of the information and allowing for mistakes to be traced
  • Show that we know the literature on the issue
  • Allow the reader to check the citation and get it in context
  • Avoid plagiarism, making a correct and ethical use of sources
