Describe the hardware memory common terms and use in Cisco routers and switches
RAM is read/write memory which contains the software and data structures that allow the router to function
Flash memory: is read/write memory and is primarily used to store the Cisco IOS software image.
NVRAM is also read/write memory and is mainly used to store the saved configuration file, called the startup-config
ROM memory contains microcode for basic functions to start and maintain the router, including firmware such as the bootstrap code and POST. Has Rommon
Describe the different operating modes for Cisco CatOS / IOS Software
User EXEC mode allows a person to access only a limited number of basic monitoring commands.
Privileged EXEC mode allows a person to access all device commands, such as those used for configuration and management, and can be password protected to allow only authorized users to access the device.
Global configuration mode, there is access to the sub configuration modes
Interface configuration mode supports commands that configure operations on a per-interface basis.
Navigate between the different operating modes listed
Router>enable
Router# configure terminal
Determine the current mode of the device
" show privilege Router> USER EXEC MODE Router# PRIVILEGED EXEC MODE Router(config) GLOBAL MODE Router(config-if)# INTERFACE MODE"
Copy and paste a configuration file from / to a router or switch
To save a Cisco router or switch configuration, you copy the running-config to the startup-config. When prompted for the destination filename, the device suggests a destination filename of “startup-config’. Simply press the enter key to complete the save.
Describe in general terms the basic functionality and key differences for the following hardware: LAN switch, router, modem, and Wireless Access Points
All the devices and connections that a given organization is responsible for maintaining make up a LAN. Consist of PCs or Servers
Switches form the aggregation point for segments of a LAN. They provide workgroup connectivity between the hosts within a LAN segment.
Routers, sometimes called gateways, provide a means to interconnect workgroup segments of a LAN together.
Wireless Access Points provide a means to interconnect clients to the rest of the wired network wirelessly.
What are the steps that a router will take to find a bootable IOS.
- Checks the configuration register setting
- Parses config for boot system command
- Defaults to first file in flash memory
- Attempts to boot from network server
- Boots helper image
- Loads the ROM Monitor (ROMMON) program
Describe where to find the configuration register parameter and how to change it
