What kind of engine?
Lycoming: IO-390-C3B6
How many cylinders does our engine have?
And how would you describe them?
4 Cylinders
Horizontally Opposed
390 cubic inches of displacement
IO-390-C3B6
What does the “IO” mean?
How about the “390”?
Does the “C3B6” have meaning?
IO means fuel injected, and the cylinders oppose each other (horizontally opposed).
390 is how much cubic inches of displacement is inside the engine. Basically, the combined volume of the cylinders.
C3B6 is the model of engine.
What is the horsepower rating? And at what RPM?
215 HP @ 2700 RPM
What is the maximum RPM?
2700 RPM
What happens if we exceed 2700 RPM?
The propeller tips may exceed their critical AOA and stall. (PHAK 5-29)
Above 2700, our performance may decrease significantly.
What is the maximum oil temperature?
235°F (113°C)
What is the minimum oil temp. for takeoff?
100°F (38°C)
Now let’s talk Oil Pressure…
Minimum (at idle)?
Normal Operating Range?
Maximum?
Minimum (at idle)….. 25 PSI
Normal Operating Range….. 55 - 95 PSI
Maximum..... 115 PSI
How about our awesome propeller???
Manufacturer?
Material?
Max and Min Diameter?
We have a 3 bladed Hartzell propeller
Ours is made of Metal
Max 74” and Min 73” diameter
Maximum Takeoff Weight?
Maximum Landing Weight?
Hint: They are the same :)
3150 lbs
3150 lbs
Max Weight in Baggage Compartment?
130 lbs
Can we fly into mild icing conditions?
NO.
“Flight into known icing conditions is prohibited.”
POH 2-16
What are the approved fuel grades?
and what color do ye think them fuel grades arrrr?
100LL - Blue
100 - Green
Good on ya’ mate!
Follow up question…
Why do we have 100LL and 100? They are the same octane, but one is low lead.
“Lead in a gas prevents damaging engine knock, or detonation,” however, “Lead is a toxic substance that can be inhaled or absorbed in the bloodstream,” (www.faa.gov)
100LL is the result of the FAA and EPA partnering to remove lead from avgas emissions.
What is the Total Fuel Capacity?
58.5 U.S. Gallons
What is the Total Usable Fuel Capacity?
56 U.S. Gallons
What is the Maximum Operating Altititude?
17,500’ MSL
