circulatory system& blood components Flashcards
what are the components of the circulatory system?
it has three main components which are : blood, blood vessels and the heart
function of rbc?
transport oxygen from the lungs to all parts of the body and carbon dioxide from the body back to the lungs
structure of rbc?
- contain haemoglobin to carry oxygen
- biconcave shape to provide a large surface area for the diffusion of oxygen
- no nucleus to provide more space for haemoglobin
function of wbc?
defend the body against disease
there are two types :
1. lymphocytes : make antibodies and antitoxins
2. phagocytes : engulf and digest pathogens/microorganism
structure of wbc?
- large cells that contain a nucleus
function of platelets?
convert fibrinogen to fibrin. fibrin forms a mesh that traps blood.
important in blood clotting and scab formation
or
clotting by converting soluble fibrinogen to insoluble ibrin to prevent blood loss and the entry of pathogen
structure of platelets?
cell fragments (very small)
function of plasma?
transport blood cells, digested food molecules (eg: glucose), carbon dioxide, urea and hormones.
salts and other chemicals are present in the blood plasma, to keep its concentration similar to the concentration of the blood cells
structure of plasma?
yellow coloured liquid
difference between lymphocytes and phagocytes structure?
- lymphocyte has a rounded nucleus meanwhile phagocyte has lobed nucleus
- lymphocyte has non-granular cytoplasm meanwhile lymphpcyte has granular cytoplasm
