Circulatory System Flashcards
What serves both digestion and transport in animals without circulatory systems?
the gastrovascular cavity
In an open circulatory system, what assists the movement of extracellular fluid?
a simple heart (aka pulsating tube)
In a closed circulatory system, where is the blood contained?
in a closed system of vessels
What are some advantages of a closed circulatory system?
blood flows more rapidly, can change where the blood goes in the system, retains molecules involved in the transport of hormones and nutrients within the vessels
What is the name of the human system also called?
the vertebrate circulatory system
What carries the blood from the heart?
arteries and arterioles
This is the site of exchange between blood and tissue and
capillaries
What carries blood back from the heart?
venules and veins
Where does blood circulate through?
the pulmonary circuit and the systemic circuit
What are the advantages of having a 4 chamber heart?
oxygenated and deoxygenated blood do not mix, gas exchange is maximized, separate circuits can operate at different pressures
What does the pulmonary circuit do?
deliver blood to the lungs
What does the systemic circuit do?
deliver blood to the rest of the body
