Circulatory System Flashcards
Veins
Carries blood to the heart. The blood pressure is low
Arteries
Carry blood away from the heart. Very thick walls and high pressure.
Capillaries
Are very tiny and are found between arteries and veins and have very thin walls.
Platelets
Are formed in the bone marrow when large cells are broken down into smaller pieces.
White blood cells
Are also formed in bone marrow. They fight off infections and diseases.
Red blood cells
Are made also in bone marrow they contain a red dye called haemoglobin. Red blood cells carry oxygen.
Plasma
Is the liquid part of the blood and his mostly made of water .
The heart
Is about the size of a clenched fist. It is made up of a muscle called cardiac muscle which does not tire easily and is very strong . The average heartbeat is around 75 beats a minute. When resting, the heartbeat decreases and when excersising it can increase .
Vena cava
Takes deoxygenated blood from the body to the right atrium.
Pulmonary artery
Takes oxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs
Aorta
Takes oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the body.
Pulmonary vein
Takes oxygenated from the lungs to the left atrium.
