Circulatory System Flashcards
What do veins do?
Bring blood into the heart (mostly deoxygenated)
What do arteries do?
Take blood out of heart (mostly oxygenated)
What is the name of the “tube” bringing blood from the lungs
The pulmonary vein
What is the name of the artery taking oxygenated blood out of the heart
Aorta
What is the name of the “tube” bringing deoxygenated blood to the heart?
Vena cava
What blood type is a universal donor?
0-
What blood type is a universal receiver?
AB+
What blood can be given to who?
Different blood can have different antigens. O has none, AB has both. Since O has none, it can be given to any blood type. (the antigens wont be recognised as an enemy). Same for + and -. + can be given + and -, - can only be given -.
Properties of Arteries
- Carries blood away from heart
- Smaller lumen
- Thick layer of smooth muscle
- No valves
- Outer walls very thick and elastic
Properties of Capillaries
- Allows substances to diffuse into our out of the blood
- Tiny lumen
- No smooth muscle
- no valves
- Only 1 cell thick walls
Properties of veins
- Carries blood back to heart
- Larger lumen
- Thin lay of smooth muscle
- Valves are present
- Thin and elastic outer walls
