Circulatory System. Flashcards
To describe the circulatory system To describe the main parts of the circulatory system To state the functions of the three Blood vessels To differentiate heartbeat and pulse
Describe the Circulatory Sytem
The circulatory system moves blood around the body, delivering nutrients and oxygen while removing waste.
What are the main parts of the circulatory system
The heart, Blood and Blood vessels
Describe the heart
The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body, supplying oxygen and nutrients to tissues and organs while removing waste products.
Describe what the left side of the heart does
The left side pumps blood that contains oxygen all around the body.
Describe what the right side of the heart does
The right side pumps blood without oxygen to the lungs only.
Describe the blood
The blood is a red liquid that flows around the body
What does the blood carry
i. Food Particles
ii. Oxygen to all parts of the body
iii. Waste products ie Carbon Dioxide From the body to the organs that get rid of them
Name the 3 types of blood vessels
Arteries
Veins
Capillaries
Describe what each of them do
Arteries - Carry blood containing oxygen and food away from the heart to the body
Veins - Carry blood-containing waste such as carbon dioxide away from the body to the heart
Capillaries - Join arteries and veins. Very thin walls to allow food and oxygen to pass through them
Name 3 vertebrates that have a similar circulatory system to human beings
Fish
Frogs
Birds
Why does your heart beat more times in a minute as an child than a adult
Because as a child you are more active therefore your heart needs to supply more food and oxygen to your body. But as an adult you are not as active therefore your heart doesn’t need to beat as much
What causes pulse
Pulse is caused by the pressure of the blood as your heart pumps it to the rest of the body
