Circulatory system Flashcards
What are the 4 major chambers?
Right atrium & ventricle, left atrium & ventricle
What are the major arteries and veins in the heart?
Vena Cavas, Pulmonary Artery & Vein, Aorta
Valves?
tricuspid > pulmonary > mitral > aortic
What is an ASD?
Atrial Septal Defect: a hole between the atrial (upper) chambers
Define systemic circulation
blood circulation from the heart to the rest of the body and back
Define Pulmonary circulation
between heart and lungs
What are the 3 types of blood vessels?
Arteries, Veins, and Capillaries
Define Arteries:
Carry blood AWAY from heart,
Except for pulmonary artery, all carry oxygenated blood
Define veins:
After capillaries, blood goes to veins
Carries blood BACK to the heart
Define Cappillaries
Smallest blood vessels
Only one cell thick
Allows for gas exchange and nutrients to pass through the capillary walls
What is an SA node?
The SA (sinus) node represents a cluster of myocytes with pacemaker activity
What are the 4 parts of blood?
Plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
Plasma:
Fluid portion of blood; 55% of your blood.
White blood cells:
DO NOT contain hemoglobin, contain nuclei, helps guard against infection, parasites, bacteria
Red blood cells:
Also known as erythrocytes, shaped like disks.
Formed in the red bone marrow
Contain no nuclei and circulate for an avg 120 days
