circulatory system Flashcards
5 functions of the circulatory system
- pump blood around the body
- transport O2 around the body
- transport CO2 and waste away from cells
- Maintain body temp
- fight infection
Structure of heart
There are four chambers:
* right atrium
* right ventricle
* left atrium
* left ventricle
Arteries
carry oxygenated blood away from the heart, have thick muscular walls, no valves, and blood is under high blood pressure.
Veins
carry de-oxygenated blood towards the heart, have thin collapsable walls, they have valves, and blood is under low blood pressure.
Capillaries
Allows the passing of oxygen to tissues and removes CO2, has very thin walls, and branch off from arterioles and venules to form networks.
Process of heart
Deoxygenated blood > vena cave > right atrium > right ventricle > pulmonary artery > lungs > intake O2 and removal CO2 and waste > oxygenated blood > pulmonary veins > left atrium > left ventricle > aorta > around the body
