Q

What is the purpose/function of white blood cells?

A

They are the police of a body. White blood cells detect, attack and destroy. Anything that is not supposed to be in the body the white blood cells attact and destroy it.

Q

What does platelets do?

A

Platelets cause blood clotting. Platelets cause blood to get sticky and when it gets sticky it becomes blood clot.

Q

What is the plasma and what does it do?

A

Plasma is the liquid part of the blood. It is in charge of transporting the substances in the blood.

17
Q

What does the vein do?

A

carries blood from the body to the heart except for the pulmonary vein.

18
Q

What does the cepillary too

A

It aids in the exchange of gasses.

19
Q

What does the heart do?

A

pumps blood around the body

20
Q

Two types of circulation

A
  1. blood is pumped from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart.

2, blood is pumped from the heart to the body and back to the heart.

21
Q

What are the four chambers (structure of the heart)

A

The left chambers
The right chambers
The upper chambers
The lower chambers

22
Q

Why are there left and right chambers?

A

to prevent the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood

23
Q

Where does deoxygenated blood and oxygenated blood travel?

A

Deoxygenated blood travels through the right chambers

Oxygenated blood travels through the left chambers

24
Q

What is the purpose of the valves

A

Valves seperate the upper chambers from the lower chambers on each side

25
Q

Which other place does valves occur?

A

At the junctions of the major vessels and the heart. These valves maintain the flow of the blood in a particular direction as they do in veins.

26
Q

What is the purpose of muscles?

A

The walls of the hearts chambers consist of cardiac muscle. This muscle has the special feature of contracting and relaxing repeatedly without fatigue unlike the muscles of the arms, for example.

27
Q

How many times does the heart contract per minute?

A

The heart contracts approximately 70 times a minute through the life of a person

28
Q

Are the walls of the artria less muscular than the walls of the ventricles?

A

considerably, yes.

29
Q

Which ventricle have the most muscular walls?

A

:Left ventricle. This chamber has to create the greatest pressure to push blood around the body to all various parts

30
Q

Where does the right ventricle pump blood?

A

Only to the nearby lungs.

31
Q

What tissue is the heart made from?

A

Cardiac Muscle tissues and other connective tissues

32
Q

What structures inside the heart keeps the blood flowing in one direction

A

Valves

33
Q

Explain why the walls of the ventricles are so much thicker than those of the atria.

A

The ventricles of the heart have thicker muscular walls than the atria. This is because blood is pumped out of the heart at greater pressure from these chambers compared to the atria.

34
Q

What is double circulation?

A

Blood travels through the heart twice in one complete circulation of the body.

34
Q

What is double circulation?

A

Blood travels through the heart twice in one complete circulation of the body.

35
Q

Systemic Circulation

A

Circulation of blood from the heart to the body and back to the heart

36
Q

What is pulmonary circulation?

A

Circulation of blood from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart

37
Q

What are two advantages of double circulation?

A
  1. Oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood are kept seperate.
  2. The left ventricle pumps blood at a much higher pressure to the systemic circulation than the right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs.
38
Q

What is tissue fluid?

A

The fluid that surrounds the cells.

39
Q

How is a tissue fluid formed?

A

It is formed by filtration of blood plasma. The liquid portion of blood that leave the cepillaries and bathes the body cells form the tissue fluid.

40
Q

What is a lymph?

A

It is a fluid found in the lymphatic system. It drains from tissue fluid into the lymph vessel. Lymph is colourless, rich in lipids and contains many white blood cells.
