Circulatory system Flashcards

1
Q

why do multi cellular organisms need Transport systems

A
  • low SA:V
  • high metabolic rate
  • lots of multicellular organisms are active so they need a constant supply of glucose and oxygen for the cells that are constantly respiring

Do Mammals have a single or double circulatory stystem

A

Double- Blood passes through the heart twice for each complete circuit in the body

Q

how does the circulatory system work in fish

A

in fish the heart pumps blood to the gills
- to pick up the oxygen and then delivers the oxygen to the rest of the body

hear-> gills-> rest of the body

Q

How does the circulatory system work in Mammals

A

the circulatory system is dived down the middle

It goes: right side-> lungs-> rest of the body-> then back to the right side of the heart

  • right side of the heart pumps blood to the lungs, whereas the left side of the heart pumps blood to the rest of the body

Q

How can the mammalian double circulatory system deliver blood more quickly to the tissues

A
  • This is because:

It gives the blood an EXTRA PUSH between the lungs and the rest of the body
- making blood travel faster, so O2 is delivered to the tissues more quickly

Q

What is a closed circulatory system and who has one

A

A closed circuit system is where the blood is enclosed inside blood vessels

ALL VERTEBRATES have one

Q

How does a closed circulatory system work

A

1) Heart pumps blood into arteries, which branch out into millions of capillaries
2) Glucose and oxygen diffuse from the blood in the capillaries, into the body cells, but blood statys inside the vessels as it circulates.
3) Veins take the blood back to the heart

Q

How does a open circulatory system work

A

open circuit system- blood isn’t enclosed in blood vessels all the time

  • the heart is segmented and contracts from the back of the insect to the front, almost like it contracts in a wave sort of format, and the blood gets pumped into a single main artery.
  • The single main artery opens up into the body cavity
  • blood flows around the insec’s organs, until it makes its way back into the heart segments through a series of valves.
