Q

What does the right atrium do

A

(On the upper part of the heart!) Receives deoxygenated blood from the vena cava and empties into the right ventricle

15
Q

Arteries

A

Carries blood away from the heart to the body’s organs. (Usually red in diagrams, Oxygenated)

Capillaries

A

Connect arteries and veins. Blood to cells. Exchange between blood and cells in other tissues.

A

A vessel that carries deoxygenated blood back to the heart (usually blue in diagrams, lack of oxygen)

18
Q

What does Blood do

A

Fluid that carries gases, nutrients, and wastes through the body.

19
Q

What is blood made of

A

Plasma, red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells

20
Q

What’s plasma

A

The fluid part of blood. A mixture of minerals, nutrients, sugars, proteins, etc.

21
Q

What do Red blood cells do

A

(Known as RBC) they are the majority of the blood cells in our body. They take oxygen to every cell in your body

22
Q

Platelets

A

Larger cells found in bone marrow. They clump together and form a plug that helps reduce blood loss. Helps create blood clots with plasma

23
Q

White blood cells

A

Destroys pathogens in the body and cleans wounds

24
Q

What is Atherosclerosis

A

A cardiovascular disease that is a major cause of heart attacks. Happens when cholesterol builds inside blood vessels. The heart becomes blocked because blood can not enter through cholesterol, causing a heart attack

25
What is a stroke
When a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked or ruptured. Part of the brain receives no oxygen, then the brain cells die
26
What are the four types of blood
A, B, AB, O
27
What does blood type mean
The type of chemicals you have on the surface of red blood cells
28
What are antigens
Chemicals on the surface of a blood cell.
29
What are antibodies
A chemical that recognizes and attached to antigens on the surface of white B blood cells. They help with your immune system
30
What is the Respiratory System
A collection of organs whose primary function is to take in oxygen and expel carbon dioxide.
31
What is Respiration
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between living cells and their environment ; breathing
32
What is the Nasal cavity
The main passageway in and out of the respiratory system. Contains mucus to moisten air, and hair to filter dirt, etc.
33
What is the Pharynx
Connects mouth to respiratory system, also known as the throat.
34
what are the two tubes of the throat "Pharynx"
Esophagus, Larynx
35
What is the Esophagus
Sits behind the trachea, and is a tube leading to the stomach
36
What is the larynx
Area of the throat that contains vocal chords and makes vocal sounds
37
What is the trachea
A non flexible tube that connects larynx to the lungs
38
What are bronchi
Tubes that connect lungs with the trachea. They branch into smaller tubes called bronchioles
39
what are alveoli
Tiny air sacs in the lungs where carbon dioxide and oxygen are exchanged. They look like grapes
40
What is the diaphragm
A dome-shaped muscle beneath the rib muscle to help you breathe
41
What is cellular Respiration (What is breathing and why we need to breathe)
You breathe in Oxygen. Oxygen is used by the cells to release energy stored in glucose. Oxygen diffuses into red blood cells and those blood cells are carried to tissue. The cells use oxygen to release ATP. Then, carbon dioxide and water are produced and exhaled. We need to breathe to power mitochondria with oxygen to make glucose and ATP.
42
What is Asthma
A condition in which a person's airways become inflamed, narrow, and produce extra mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe
43
What is Emphysema
A lung disease that blocks airflow and makes it difficult to breathe. Symptoms are: Short of breath, wheezing, or chronic cough.
44
What is SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome)
A contagious and sometimes fatal illness caused by a coronavirus. Symptoms are: Fever, Dry cough, headache, muscle aches, and difficulty breathing
