Circulatory & Respiratory Systems Flashcards
What does the respiratory system do?
It allows oxygen to be supplied to the body and carbon dioxide is removed from the body.
What does the circulatory system do?
It transfers the energy produced in respiration to the parts of the body that need it.
What happens in a muscle cell during physical activity?
You need oxygen to get ATP(energy). Blood carried oxygen to cells > heart pumps the blood > whilst doing exercise heart rate will increase > to pump blood quicker.
If circulatory system is struggling to get rid of carbon dioxide what happens?
pH will drop and let our body know there is an issue
What is another second sign if all is not well in the body?
Heat produced by muscles leads to temperature rise - releasing oxygen from OXYHEMOGLOBIN
Remember what ATP is?
How energy is made available to cells
If we have made lactic acid, where is it transported?
The liver
Why do we carry on breathing heavy after we have stopped exercising?
we need extra oxygen to go to the liver and convert lactic acid into ATP
What are the useful things for monitoring a persons circulatory/respiratory system?
- breathing rate
- heart rate
- blood oxygen concentration
- blood lactic acid concentration
The way in which the heart and lungs of an individual are functioning can give a good indication of what?
The general state of health of a person
What are useful physiological indicators?
Heart rate, ventilation rate & the chemical state of the blood in circulation.
