Circulatory Disorders Flashcards
1
Q
Circulatory disorders of the liver
A
- Impaired blood flow into liver
- hepatic artery obstruction
- portal vein obstruction - Impaired blood flow through liver
- chronic passive congestion - Hepatic venous outflow obstruction
- Budd-Chiari Syndrome
- sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (veno-occlusive disease)
2
Q
Causes of portal vein obstruction
A
- Extra-hepatic
- intra-abdominal sepsis
- pancreatitis
- post surgical thrombosis
- trauma
- inherited/acquired hypercoagulable disorders - Intra-hepatic
- malignancy
- cirrhosis
3
Q
Effects of portal vein obstruction
A
- portal hypertension - esophageal varices
- ascites
- abdominal pain
4
Q
Features of chronic passive congestion of the liver
A
- caused by congestive heart failure
- obstruction to outflow tracts (hepatic vein obstruction)
- nutmeg liver
- central hemorrhagic necrosis
- cardiac sclerosis - centrilobular fibrosis
5
Q
Features of Budd-Chiari syndrome
A
- hepatic vein obstruction
- hepatomegaly, pain, ascites
6
Q
Causes of Budd-Chiari syndrome (2)
A
- Hepatic vein thrombosis - primary myeloproliferative disorders, inherited disorders of coagulation, pregnancy, oral contraceptive use
- Tumour invasion - HCC, renal cell carcinoma
7
Q
Features of sinusoidal obstruction syndrome
A
- veno-occlusive disease
- damages sinusoidal endothelium
- resultant cellular debris embolised downstream w occlusion of terminal hepatic vein
- hepatomegaly, ascites, jaundice
8
Q
Causes of sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (3)
A
- Bush tea (pyrrolizidine alkaloid)
- Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation
- Chemotherapy
