circulatory disorders Flashcards
Pericarditis - cause
viral, bacterial, fungal infections
pericarditis - body structure affected
PERICARDIUM - thin two-layered fluid filled sac that covers the outer surface of the heart which prevents friction with other organs and tissues.
layers become inflamed and may rub against the heart. This causes the heart to be unable to stretch to its full length during contraction and relaxation.
pericarditis - diagnosis
EKG - detects and records the heart’s electrical activity, certain results may indicate pericarditis
aneurysm - definiton
-Localized, blood-filled
balloon-like bulge in
the wall of a blood
vessel
-Bulge can rupture,
resulting in severe
brain bleeding and
potentially death
aneurysm - symptoms
Sudden, extremely
severe headache,
nausea and vomiting,
aneurysm - diagnosis
Computerized tomography
(CT) Scan: specialized X-ray
exam, test to determine if
you have bleeding in the
brain.
aneurysm - treatment
-Surgical clipping
or endovascular coiling used
to seal off an unruptured
brain aneurysm and help
prevent a future rupture.
arrhythmia - definition
Abnormal heart
rhythm
aneurysm - causes
high blood pressure weakens artery wall
aneurysm - structure affected
BLOOD VESSELS - walls of the blood vessels begin to weaken
aarhythmia - symptoms
Fatigue, dizziness,
lightheadedness,
ararhythmia - diagnosis
Echocardiogram (ECG): tests
the electrical activity of your
heart.
arrhythmia - treatment
pacemaker
arrhythmia - structures involved
SA node, AV node, Purkinje fibers are dysfunctional
atherosclerosis - definition
Loss of elasticity and
hardening of arteries
usually due to plaque
buildup.
atherosclerosis - symptoms
chest pain
atherosclerosis - diagnosis
magnetic resonance
angiography (MRA): A scan
of enlarged blood vessels in
body
atherosclerosis - treatment
angioplasty
coronary heart disease - defintion
Waxy substance called
plaque builds up
inside the coronary
arteries.
atherosclerosis - structure involved
accumulation of plaque on + underneath the artery wall causes the walls of the arteries to lose their elasticity and harden
