What are the arteries
These carry blood away from the heart
They have thick walls because the blood pressure is high
What are the capillaries
Very thin blood vessels
This is where substances are exchanged between the calls and the blood
What are veins
These carry blood back to the heart
They often have valves to prevent backflow of the blood
What is plasma
The liquid part of the blood
Transports substances such as carbon dioxide and soluble food molecules eg glucose
What is a red blood cell
Contains haemoglobin which binds to oxygen to transport it from the lungs to the tissues
What are the white blood cells
These defend the body against pathogens
What are platelets
Fragments of cells which clot blood at the site of wounds
