Circulation Flashcards
Name three tissues that make up arteries.
Elastic tissue
Collagen
Smooth muscle
What is the intima of the artery composed of?
Inner surface lining of endothelial cells
What is the adventitia of the artery composed of?
Collagen connective tissue
How many elastic laminae are found in the artery?
Two
Name the tissues that make up veins.
Collagen
Little smooth muscle
Little elastic tissue
How many elastic laminae are found in the vein?
One internal
What is the function of valves in veins?
Prevents back flow of blood
Why are veins surrounded by skeletal muscle?
Skeletal muscle contracts to allow blood in the veins to flow back to the heart
Describe the structure of endothelium cells.
Little cytoplasm
Single layer of pavement cells
Prominent adheren junctions
Can be fenestrated
What are capillaries?
Tubes of endothelial cells (one cell thick) bound to a basement membrane.
Describe the steps of pulmonary circulation.
- Deoxygenated blood leaves right ventricle via pulmonary trunk
- Pulmonary trunk branches into two pulmonary arteries for each lung
- Blood becomes oxygenated and leaves the lungs via the four pulmonary veins
- Blood enters into the left atrium, then left ventricle to be pumped through the aorta and to the body
Describe the steps of systemic circulation.
- Oxygenated blood leaves the left ventricle via the aorta
- Arteries branch off the aorta and divide into arterioles and then capillaries
- Deoxygenated blood enters the venules which unite to form veins
- The veins drain into the inferior and superior vena cava and blood enters the right atrium
Which artery supplies the SAN?
60% of people: right coronary artery
40% of people: right circumflex artery
