Circular Motion Flashcards
How do convert from frequency to time period?
f = 1 / T f = frequency T = time period
Where does acceleration go in circular motion?
Acceleration is in the direction of the centre of the circle.
Why is an object always accelerating in circular motion?
The velocity is constantly changing direction, so it is always changing so it must be accelerating.
How do we calculate the velocity in circular motion with time period?
v = 2πr / T v = velocity r = radius T = time period
How do we calculate the velocity in circular motion with frequency?
v = 2πrf v = velocity r = radius f = frequency
What is angular velocity?
Angular displacement per second.
How do we calculate angular velocity with time period?
2π / T = ω
ω = Angular velocity
T = time period
How do we calculate angular velocity with frequency?
2πf = ω ω = Angular velocity f = frequency
How do we work out velocity using angular velocity?
v = ωr v = velocity r = radius ω = angular velocity
What direction is velocity always in?
Velocity always acts to the tangent of the radius.
What is centripetal force?
Resultant force pointing towards the centre of the circle.
If centripetal force points towards the centre of the circle, then why is there no force pointing outwards?
The direction of the velocity does change but speed is constant so if everything is balanced, the direction can’t change.
How do we calculate centripetal force using velocity?
F = mv² / r F = centripetal force m = mass v = velocity r = radius
How do we calculate centripetal force using angular velocity?
F = mω²r F = centripetal force m = mass ω = angular velocity r = radius
How do we calculate centripetal acceleration?
a = v² / r a = centripetal acceleration v = velocity r = radius
