Circular Motion 5.2 Flashcards
What is the definition of a radian?
-One radian is defined as the angle subtended at the centre of a circle when the arc is equal in length to the radius of the circle
What is the period and Angular velocity?
-Period: time taken in seconds for one complete circular path
-Angular velocity: the rate of angular rotation, measured in radians per second
What is the centripetal acceleration?
-The acceleration of an object moving with uniform circular motion, it is directly radially inwards perpendicular to the velocity at any instant.
How many degrees is π(3.14) radians?
180 degrees
What is an equation for the speed of a body moving in a circle involving the circumference?
v=2πr/T
What is the equation for Angular velocity involving frequency?
ω=2πf
ω= angular velocity
Why is speed constant but velocity is changing in an object in circular motion? and why is this object described as accelerating
-Speed is scalar so if the object has a constant speed it shall remain constant
-Velocity is a vector quantity which means you have to consider both its direction and magnitude and as the direction is constantly changing so is its velocity
-Since acceleration is described as rate of change of velocity the object is said to be accelerating
What is the equation for centripetal acceleration?
centripetal acceleration= v^2/r
What is centripetal force?
-Resultant force on an object, acting towards the centre of the circle, causing it to move in a circular path
