Circular Motion Flashcards
What is a radian?
A radian is the angle subtended at the centre of a circle by an arc that is equal in length to the radius
What is the equation of a radian?
θᵣ = s/r
arclength / radius
How do you convert degrees into radians?
θᵣ = 2π/360÷θ
What is angular velocity?
The rate of change of angular displacement
What is the equation for angular velocity?
ω = θᵣ/t
What is frequency?
Number of full oscillations per second
What is period?
Time taken for 1 complete oscillation
What is the equation for angular velocity using period?
ω = 2π/T
What is the equation for angular velocity using frequency?
ω = 2πf
What is the equation of the velocity of a body travelling a circular path?
v = ωr
where r is the radius
What is centripetal acceleration?
Centripetal acceleration is the acceleration experienced by a body travelling a circular path at a constant speed
Why does a body experience centripetal acceleration?
A body travelling a circular path at a constant speed experiences a change in velocity as the direction of traveling is always changing towards the centre of the circle, and acceleration is the rate of change of velocity
How is centripetal acceleration calculated?
a = v²/r
How is centripetal acceleration calculated using angular velocity?
a = rω²
What is centripetal force?
Centripetal force is the resultant force experienced by a body in circular motion towards the centre of the circular path
