Cinematography Flashcards
What is a Codec?
A way of compressing down data to make it smaller
What is Dynamic Range?
The range of values the camera can record before it starts clipping off the highlights and the shadows
The definition of Chroma
Color
The definition of Luma
Brightness
What is bit depth?
The number of possible values you can represent in your color space or codec
What is a bit number and what are the implications?
An Exponent.
2 to the 8th= 256 (8 bit)
2 to the 10th= 1024 (10 bit)
It’s not just a ratio.
What are 2 principles we need to know about H.264 codec?
1) it likes bright things
2) it likes contrasts things
What is the benefit of having a big sensor?
The camera’s sensor is what turns light into a digital image. The bigger the sensor, the more light is captured, thereby creating a better quality image.
Which sensor is cheaper to make? CMOS or CCD?
CMOS
These sensors are more mature and have been mass produced for a long period of time.
CCD
How many samples does chroma sub-sampling have and what are they?
3. They are: 1) 4:4:4 2) 4:2:2 3) 4:2:0
Why does a CMOS sensor have lower light sensitivity then a CCD?
Because each pixel on a CMOS sensor has several transistors located next to it.
