What is cinematography?
A term which describes everything related to the camera, camera movements, camera shots, lighting; camera angles
Low angle shot
Looking up
High angle shot
Looking up
Eye level
Shot at the eye of the subject
Worms eye
Screen shot from directly below
Birds Eye
Screen shot from directly above
Canted
Camera is tilted on its side
Pov
Point of view
Pan
Camera swivels but stays in the same base position
Crane shot
The camera is moved up or down on a crane
Tilt
A vertical movement in the camera- up it down whilst the camera stays fixed
Zoom
The camera is moved smoothly towards or away from the subject
Tracking shot
The camera is moved smoothly toward or away from the subject on track, can follow the subject
Crab
The actual base position of the camera is moved left and right
Extreme long shot
Used as a establishing shot, furthest distance from the subject
Long shot
Shows the moon entire subject intended to place the subject in its surroundings
Long shot
showsthe entire subject intended to place the subject in its surroundings
Medium long shot
The subject and the setting occupy roughly equal areas in the frame
Extreme close up
Focus on a section of the subject to draw attention to a particular part
Big close up
The subject fills the screen focus attention on a persons feelings or reactions
Close up
Typically from the top of the shoulders up shoes a small part of the scene in detail
Medium close up
Can roughly see half of the subject if actor the frame passes through the waist
Low key lighting
Created by using back lights
Produces sharp contrasts of light in a dark area
Deep distinct shadows/ silohuettes are formed
High key lighting
More filler lights, lighting is natural and realistic
Produces brightly lit sets or a sunny day
