Ciliated epithelial cells (in order) Flashcards
What name is given to the cells which tend to look like a normal cell except for one key difference, namely that they have long hair-like structures on them?
Ciliated Epithelial Cells
What is the difference in appearance between normal cells and Ciliated Epithelial Cells?
Ciliated Epithelial Cells have long hair-like structures on them
What name is given to the hair-like structures which are found on certain specialised cells?
Cilia
In what way do the cilia which are found on Ciliated Epithelial Cells move?
They move backwards and forwards, or (as the video puts it) they ‘waft’ from side to side
In which of the locations where Ciliated Epithelial Cells are found do they serve a protective function, and what exactly do they do?
They are found in the trachea (or windpipe), and they move things like mucus and dust away from our lungs
In which location other than the trachea (or windpipe) might you find Ciliated Epithelial Cells, and what function do they carry out there?
You might find them in the oviduct (which joins the ovaries to the uterus), and they move the egg away from the ovaries towards the uterus in an attempt at fertilization leading to pregnancy or menstruation.
