Q

In his year of consul, how did Cicero oppose himself to Caesar

A

Opposing a bill to create a commision of ten men for five years who would control the redistribution of land, he argued it would give them the power of kings (fitting in with his fear of unconstitutional power in the hands of individuals)

Q

How did Cicero handle the Catiline Conspiracy in his year of Consul and how did he gain support from the Optimates.

A

Wanted to punish them legally, so not excecution. Caesar argued for life imprisonment, Cato swayed the Senate to have them executed. As Cato was an optimate and Cicero followed his argument, he gained determined support from the elite in the Senate.

11
Q

How had Ciceros want for amicitia with Pompey broken down by 61 BC

A

Pompey wanted a triumph and to become consul for a second time after annexing the Mithridates Kingdom.
To achieve the latter the senate would have to suspend the consular elections until after the triumph.
Cato swayed the senate to refuse this request.
Cicero couldn’t do anything to help Pompey without alienating and important ally

12
Q

How was Ciceros potential relationship with Caesar crushed

A

Cato and the Optimates rejected his request to have recognition of his own services to the state.
Similar to the Pompey incident in 61, if Cicero had tried to help Caesar, he would have lost the backing of Cato and the Optimates.
