Articulate the Principles of Person-Centered
- Developed by Carl Rogers in the 1940’s and 50’s, continued to develop through work of humanistic psychologists such as Hazler (1999), and Norcross (2010)
- Founded on Rogers’ belief regarding the SELF-ACTUALIZING TENDENCY, or the capacity to fulfil one’s own potential. Therefore, change can occur from within.
- The goal of therapy is to facilitate a space where those deep internal resources for change by the three core conditions: Empathy, Unconditional Positive Regard, Congruence.
- Other main principles include Congruence/Incongruence and the Ideal and the Real self (emotions, behaviors, thoughts)
The Mechanism of change for Person-Centered
- Rogers was quoted in saying that only when I can accept myself will I be able to change
- The therapeutic alliance is the active ingredient
- This is created through Rogers’ six “Necessary and Sufficient” conditions for therapeutic environment to foster the self-actualizing tendency:
a. Therapist-Client Psychological Contact
b. Client Incongruence or Vulnerability
c. Therapist’s Congruence or Genuineness
d. Therapist’s Unconditional Positive Regard
e. Therapist Empathy
f. Client Perception
