Describe the Bourbon Triumvirate
Three power white democratic politicians who wanted a limited government. All three favored white supremacy, railroads, and mining.
Who was Henry Grady?
An editor of the Atlanta Journal Newspaper who wanted to diversify agriculture and industrial the south. Invented the term “New South.” Reminder: the newspaper article he wrote about his friend’s burial.
Describe Jim Crows Laws
A set of law in 1889 that allowed public places to be segregated. Took away citizenship (14th amendment) of African-Americans.
Who was Alonzo Herndon?
An African-American entrepreneur who learned barber trade and started his own business called Crystal Palace. Also created Atlanta Mutual Life Insurance. Born a slave.
Who was Booker T. Washington?
Born a slave. Believes African-Americans should work for their rights and be grateful for the rights they have at the moment. Learn skill/trade to improve your status.
Who was WEB DuBois?
Born a freeman. Believes African-Americans should automatically get the same treatment as Whites. Focus on education rather than manual labor. Encourage protest.
How were Booker T. and WEB DuBois different?
Booker T. believed African-Americans should work hard for their status and be grateful for the rights they have now. While DuBois believes that African-Americans should automatically get the same rights and status as Whites and that they should focus more on Education while encouraging protest.
Describe the Atlanta Race Massacre.
When fake stories about African-Americans harassing white civilians were posted on newspapers causing an angry mob to rise up and start attacking blacks. The militia had to disperse the angry mob of whites. This led to a compromise that would segregate blacks and whites.
How did Georgia help in WWI?
- Provided over 10,000 soldiers and women volunteers (nurses)
- Military camps around state which trained troops

What is a liberty bond? What is a victory garden?
- A liberty bond is money loaned to the government to help pay for the cost of war.
- A victory garden are grown by Americans to ensure civilians and troops had a food supply.

Who was Eugene Talmadge?
A controversial politician who was elected to governor for 4 years. Made 4 promises as governor (balance state budget, lower utility rate, reduce the price of auto tags, and reorganize the state highway board.) Opposed FDR’s new deal programs. Segregationist.
What were the New Deal Programs?
CCC - Civilian Conservation Corps
AAA - Agricultural Adjustment Act
REA - Rural Electrification Act
SSA - Social Security Act

Created jobs for young, unemployed men to work on public service projects. Created parks and roads. Reforestation. Selling and conservation.
