Cleaning dentures that have been causing denture stomatitis
Post oral/ perio surgery
Short-term use for candidiasis
Necrotising gingivitis
Aphthous ulcer
Oral mucositis in cancer patients
In physically or mentally impaired patients to help maintain good OH
What is CHX and its mechanism of action?
Antiseptic and disinfectant.
Di-cationic molecule - binds to negatively charged bacterial cell walls.
One cation invades the cell and the other alters the cell wall - increases permeability leading to precipitation of the cytoplasm and cell death
What is the definition of substantivity?
The prolonged association between a material and substrate - how long CHX sticks to oral mucosa and teeth
Side effects of CHX
Hypersensitivity
Anaphylaxis
Taste disturbances
Mucosal irritation
Staining of teeth/ composite
Burning/ stinging of the mouth if not diluted properly
What affects CHX substantivity?
Drugs
Certain food/ drinks
Absorption to oral surfaces
Maintenance of antimicrobial activity
What are the benefits of CHX?
12 hour substantivity
No known bacterial resistance or superinfection reported with use of CHX
Good safety record
Available OTC
What is the general prescription for CHX?
CHX 0.2%, 10ml swirled for 1 minute 2x/day for max. 2 weeks or until acute symptoms subside
