Upbringing/ background

A

Son of Lord Randolph Curchill who was seen as a contorversial figure within the conservatives, PM by this period of time. Similar to Winston Churchill.
Mother came from an American family and was dubbed the “American princess”, Randolph subverted the aristocratic expectation of marrying someone who was British and upperclass- depicts him as an anomalie.
Came from a priviledged/ rich background.

Therefore anti-communist, socialism associated with members of the labour party negatively.
Belief of authoritarianism, admired Mussolini, Franco and initally Hitler in their singular authority for improving the pse stability of their countries post-depression.
‘New Liberal’- progressive for the 20th century.

Political situation

A

Growth of suffrage movement for increased women’s rights.
Conservative domination end of 1919, reflected the social hierachy, the upperclasses were to dominate the pse in a “paternalistic” (restricting freedom) way.
Liberals dominated the end of the 20th century because of social reforms and national efficiency such as national insurance and old age pension.
Boer war- challenge to imperalism because of the time it took to defeat the Boers and the treatment of women and children.
Scism- Irish question.
WW1- permanent decline of the Liberal party, large contingency of people becoming anti-imperalist and a huge anti-war sentiment throughout England.

Social situation

A

Growth of suffrage movement for women, position of women in society becomes increasingly elevated after WW1. Public perceptions of women also developped.
Boer War- exposed the malnourished workforce and appaling treatment and conditions in work places, the way the English treated the Boer women and children.
WW1- Mass unrest and strikes to show resistance
1910- Growth of strikes and trade unions.

Economic situation

A

Industrial revolution had mass implications on the economy- growth of Empire and trade but being threatened by the USA and Germany.
WW1- No longer the leading global economy, manufacturing which is the backbone of society begins to decline.
