Churchill and his achievements Flashcards
battle field successes DUNKIRK
deserves credit for not surrendering to Hitler and fighting on. 330,000 rescued from Dunkirk resulting in 500,000 rifles being sent over from the USA
battle field successes BATTLE OF BRITAIN
supported by churchills diplomatic skills ensured the americans provided vital economic resources to GB such as led lease and cash and carry GB recieved $22bn in aid
battle field successes GRAND ALLIANCE
churchill played an important part in keeping together the grand alliance between USA and USSR travelling between the two countires during the war and visiting both leaders amounted to a total of 40,000 miles travelled.
battle field successes TAKING THE WAR TO GMY
churchill did not intend GB to simply await a GM assult instead he wanted to be seen as taking the war to GMY to ensure morale remained high. this was seen in the 1000 bomber raids and devoting resources to north africa where wavell was able to take on and force ITY to retreat .
Home front successes INCREASING MORALE
supported the war effort and enouraged the GB society to contribute towards the war. 46% of adults were in war related production, civil defence or muntions.
Home front successes SPEECHES
churchills speeches, bearings and actions all personified defiance. he was described a natural orator which motivated the GB public
churchills main contribution to winning the war was to talk about it. WC defiance was heard in one of his most famous speeches “ we will fight them on th beaches” following the evac of dunkirk
Battle field failures ITY CAMPAIGN
italy did not prove to be the “soft underbelly” that churchill had predicted. GM resistance was fierce GM defenders were highly trained and the gustav line appeared to be an excellent defence line in monte casino as it used the mountinous terrain effectively. the ITY campaign was slow and a failure in hoping that it would lead to an invasion of central europe from the south.
slow GB only advanced 70 miles in 8 months
the landing craft was short in supply for anzio (taking on monte casino from the back) also GB failed to march on rome.
battle field failures D DAY
operation overlord was a USA dominated affair with general eisenhower in controll/command.
WC also ensured that others didnt get the credit - dowding who played a key role in B of B was replaced.
battle field failures MEDITERRANEAN CAMPAIGN
WC decision to divert 62,000 troops from NA to greece was described as “ a strategic blunder” as it allowed Romell to gain a strong foothold in north africa. GB also didnt posses the resources.
Home front failures MORALE
morale was sustained by more than WC speeches and one should consider the other members of the cabinet and thier achievemnets in raising morale
BEVIN- ensured morale in factories was maintained though higher wages, better canteen facilities and lunch time entertainment
BEAVERBROOK - increased production by 250% by launching an appeal for aluminium “ we will turn your pots and pans into spitfires and hurricanes” increasing production from 220 - 660 a month
BRAKEN - sustaining morale through presenting war news in a positive light as also 80% of GB public read a newspaper.
WC APPOINTED ALL OF THESE PEOPLE!!!!!
