Chuncks Flashcards

1
Q

What is a chunk?

A
  • Collection of neurons or memory strands usually related by context (like a hook)
  • formed by repeatedly bringing the same set of neurons or memory strands into focused memory
  • Can be any size - playing piano or sport or a combination or letters to make a work
  • Takes a single slot of focused memory

Q

Why is rereading content not as efficient as other learning methods?

A
  • Re-consuming the same content isn’t enough to develop your own understand of material
  • e.g. seeing someone do a perfect squat isn’t enough to be able to do it, you have to make the connections yourself
  • to strength association between neurons you have to recall their association from memory yourself

Q

How dose your environment when learning effect memory creation?

A
  • environmental conditions form part of the chunks as your learning
  • recalling in different locations and at different time can strength your understanding of concepts and ideas by adding different hooks from the environment

Q

Forming a Chunk

A

Focused Attention

  • bring ideas and memory strands into working memory
  • pomodoro possibly

Understanding the concept

  • ensure you understand the concept
  • seeing or knowing an answer written isn’t understanding, you must know the concepts
  • “Understanding is like a super glue that helps hold the underlying memory traces together”

Practice

  • recall memories yourself using your own neural network to master material
  • mini tests immediately after learning and testing yourself with flash cards
  • spaced repetition allows diffused mode to strengthen synapsis in between learning

Q

Why is Recall Important?

A
  • recalling related memories build stronger synapsis between them strengthening chunks
  • rereading or reconsuming the same content isn’t extending your own neural network or strengthening relationships between your neurons
  • the stronger the synapsis the strong the chunks

Q

Why is highlighting possibly a bad learning technique?

A
  • highlighting when done wrong is an illusion of competence
  • can give the illusion that the highlighting is sticking the idea in memory
  • efficient highlighting is usually no more then a single work or phrase in a paragraph
  • handwritten side notes work better

Q

Is re reading a text book alone efficient? Why?

A

No.
Just rereading text dose nothing to connect ideas together and therefore creating stronger chunks in memory.
Making connection between individual memories and / or chunk in working memory is how to develop strong synapses.

Spaced repetition dose show signs of retention however.

Q

Transfer?

A
  • Chinks can be related to each other in different ways
  • diffuse mode allows the brain to relate seemingly unrelated chunks in creative and imaginative ways
  • Incomplete
