Intro to בשלח:
We build trust through experience.
נסיון= experience
נסיון = challenge (purpose = to show what we are capable of, a challenge from Hashem is meant to push us forward and show ourselves what we are capable of.)
נס = miracle (purpose: show that Hashem is there)
נס= banner (purpose: to show a message)
17 And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led them not by the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said: ‘Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to Egypt.’
דרך ארץ פלשתים would have been the direct route to get from מצרים to ארץ ישרא. If Hashem choose not to take them that way, there must be a reason.
רש”י (כי קרוב הוא) – The path was so easy and close that it would have been too easy for them to run back to מצרים if they got scared.
רשב”ם – Since the road was direct they would get to כנען very quickly and have to start fighting to conquer the land right away. They would not have been ready and this would have caused them to want to return to מצרים.
ספורנו – Many people traveled on דרך ארץ פלשתים and בנ”י would have found out sooner that the מצריים were chasing after them. They would have gotten scared and surrendered.
18 But God led the people about, by the way of the wilderness by the Red Sea; and the children of Israel went up armed out of the land of Egypt.
And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him; for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying: ‘God will surely remember you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you.
20 And they took their journey from Succoth, and encamped in Etham, in the edge of the wilderness.
21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; that they might go by day and by night:
22 the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, departed not from before the people.
Once again we see בני ישראל has to trust Hashem by following a cloud. This is a challenge(נסיון) because they don’t know where they are going, but is a miracle that Hashem is guiding them so openly.
The journey from מצרים:
Day 1: רעמסס to סוכות
Day 2: סוכות to איתן
1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying
2 ‘Speak unto the children of Israel, that they turn back and encamp before Pi-hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal-zephon, over against it shall ye encamp by the sea.
3 And Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel: They are entangled in the land, the wilderness hath shut them in.
4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he shall follow after them; and I will get Me honour upon Pharah, and upon all his host; and the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD
In these פסוקים Hashem is telling Moshe his plan:
1) Bnei Yisrael will turn (this will cause #2)
2) פרעה will think they are lost
2a) Hashem will harden his heart (only though the combination of 2-3 will פרעה decide to do #4)
4) פרעה will chase after בני ישראל
5) Hashem will punish the מצרים (קריעת ים סוף can only happen because of #4)
6) מצרים will recognize Hashem (this was the real goal the entire plan)
This changes our understanding about קריעת ים סוף. Hashem did not split the sea because בני ישראל was stuck, rather Hashem caused them to be stuck so that He could do the miracle for them.
5 And it was told the king of Egypt that the people were fled; and the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned towards the people, and they said: ‘What is this we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?
6 And he made ready his chariots, and took his people with him
