chronic venous insufficiency
a conditions in which the veins do not efficiently return blood from the lower limbs back to the heart
incompetent venous circulation because of partial vein blockage or venous valve leakage
incurable but manageable
VI- edema
present

normal
VI- color
normal or cyanotic depending on dependency, petechiae and brown pigmentation with chronicity d/t RBC death in subcutaneous tissue
VI- skin changes
brown pigmentation around ankles, stasis dermatitis. thickening of skin and narrowing of the leg as scarring develops
VI- ulceration
develops on side of ankles if present, especially medially
VI- gangrene
does not develop
AI- edema
absent
AI- pain
intermittent claudication the progresses to pain at rest
AI- pulses
decreased or absent
AI- color
pale on elevation; dusky red on dependency
AI- temp
cool
AI- skin changes
trophic changes; thin, shiny, atrophic skin, loss of hair over foot and toes, nails thickened and ridged
AI- ulcerations
at points or trauma or on feett
