Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Flashcards
COPD
inflammatory lung disease involving constriction of airways and difficulty in breathing
chronic bornchitis
inflammation of the bronchial tubes causing a constant cough and overproduction of mucus
emphysema
damage to the alveoli that leads to a loss of elasticity, decreasing the amount of air that can be exhaled
signs and symptoms
constant cough
chest tightness
SOB
wheezing
medial management
bronchodilators
combination of bronchodilators plus inhaled glucocorticosteroids
surgery
special considerations/precautions
- oxygen levels are lower than normal
- fall risk
PT interventions- tests
6MWT
Borg RPE for COPD scale
Modified medical research council questionnaires for COPD
timed up and go test
PT interventions
- reduce dyspnea and improve pulmonary strength
- tripod positioning
- 12 session over 6-12 weeks recommeneded
- 4 weeks of PT can improve QoL and SOB
- endurance training, strength training, airway clearing techniques
Bronchodilators
Used through an inhaler
Relax the muscles around the airways to help breathing become easier
Combination Bronchodilators plus Inhaled Glucocorticosteroids
Used with more severe symptoms
Help to reduce airway inflammation
surgery: Bullectomy
As the air sacs are destroyed, larger air spaces called Bullae form and disturbbreathing
surgery: Lung Volume Reduction
Remove damaged tissue from the lungs
surgery types
- bullectomy
- lung volume reduction
- lung transplant
