Chronic Inflammation Flashcards
1
Q
What are the cell types involved in chronic inflammation ?
A
- Lymphocytes
- Macrophages
- Plasma Cells
- Fibroblasts
2
Q
List the major causes of Chronic Inflammation.
A
- Arising from acute inflammation
-Large volume of damage
-Inability to remove debris
-Fails to resolve - Arising as a primary lesion
-No acute phase
-Can be a result of :
- Autoimmunal disorder
- Material resistant to cellular digestion
- Exogenous substances eg. Sutures, glass
- Endogenous subtances eg. Keratin, Hair, necrotic tissue
3
Q
Describe the effects of Chronic Inflammation.
A
o Scarring and fibrosis
o Granuloma formation
4
Q
List the factors involved in promoting healing and repair.
A
o Cleanliness o Apposition of edges o Sound nutrition o Metabolic stability and normality o Normal inflammatory and coagulation mechanisms
5
Q
List the factors that impair healing and repair.
A
o Dirty gaping wound, large haematoma
o Poorly nourished, lack of vitamins C and A
o Abnormal CHO metabolism, diabetes, corticosteroid therapy
o Inhibition of angiogenesis
6
Q
What is the role of angiogenesis in healing and repair ?
A
This is the formation of new blood vessels.
This simply enables the blood supply to enter the damaged tissue.
