Chronic Illness Flashcards
2
ACE test (Adverse Childhood Experiences) predicts likelihood of weight gain, smoking, drug use, development of chronic illness.
1
First of 3 talks on how nutrition can help us recover from chronic illness
3
ACE leads to Chronic Stress, which means we constantly are producing adrenaline= stress response. This leads to chronic illness
4
Researchers know chronic stress causes cell wall permeability. What is cell wall permeability?
5
NSAIDs cause cell wall permeability.
6
Taking NSAIDs for stress headaches or if you have stress plus arthritis = a double dose of cell wall permeability.
7
Cell wall permeability leads to inflammation because the immune system is over-activated. It uses histamine as a marker to tag and kill invaders – histamine is inflammatory.
8
Chronic stress= blood goes to arms and legs for fight or flight instead of digesting
9
Alzheimer’s, Fibromyalgia, M.S, Lupus, Ankylosing Spondylitis all had their start showing digestive problems- we didn’t know this when my mom got sick, but my friends and I have all found remission of symptoms through an anti-inflammatory diet.
11
Vitamin C- needed to make collagen= foundation for bones structure that calcium gets deposited onto
12
Our heart needs calcium in order to beat– all muscles need it in order to contract– so going to the bones releases Vitamin C to make adrenaline and calcium for our heart and other muscles.
13
But blood vessels and capillaries need Vitamin C to be strong and flexible- throughout the body, including the digestive tract. Without it, they become weak and brittle, especially little capillaries like we have in our digestive tract.
14
Remember Vitamin C is needed to make adrenaline and adrenaline is priority when stressed.
15
Study: low Vitamin C= 6x increase in cholesterol levels in monkeys
16
Low Vitamin C levels + chronic stress are the perfect storm to create osteoporosis, clogged arteries and chronic illness
