Chronic Flashcards
1
Q
List 3 causes of chronic inflammation
A
- Persistent infections
- Hypersensitivity disease (Type 4, or severe Type 1 to allergies)
- Prolonged exposure to toxic agents (endogenous or exogenous)
2
Q
What is granulomatous inflammation?
A
A type of chronic inflammation, occurs especially when the causative agent of the response is difficult to eradicate/digest.
Characteristic features:
1. Granulomas - epitheloid histocytes
2. Multinucleated giant cells - arise becos of lymphocytes that secrete cytokines, triggering histocytes to aggregate together
3
Q
Granuloma VS granulation
A
Granuloma: aggregate of epithelioid histocytes
Granulation: Important components of healing and compromises small blood vessels in a connective tissue
4
Q
Where are epitheloid histocytes derived from?
A
Macrophage
