Chromotography Flashcards
What is chromatography?
The process by which small amounts of dissolved substances are separated by running a solvent along a material such as absorbent paper.
How does chromatography work?
Some substances in a mixture will dissolve better than others in a solvent and some adsorb better onto the surface of the stationary phase better than other.
What are the different types of chromatography?
Paper chromatography
Thin layer chromatography- TLC
Gas chromatography- GC
High performance liquid chromatography- HPLC
Why are measurements taken from the chromatogram?
To help identify the compounds present.
What are the measurements?
Travelled by the solvent and the distance travelled by the individual spots.
Formulae of chromatography?
Rf= distance travelled by component/ distance travelled by solvent.
