Chromosomes, Genes And DNA Flashcards
What is the shape of DNA?
3D double helix
What is DNA consisted of?
Deoxyribose sugars, phosphate groups and bases ( A,T,G,C )
These together are called a nucleotide
What is base pairing?
This is the way that Adenine must combine with Thymine and Cytosine must combine with Guanine.
How many bases code for an amino acid?
Three, called a base triplet.
What did Erwin Chargaff do?
He used chemical analysis to determine the base pairing rule ( A=T, G=C )
What did Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins do?
Used X-Ray diffraction to determine the overall DNA shape and the position of the phosphate group.
What did James Watson and Francis Crick do?
Used modelling to develop a 3D model of DNA, illustrating DNA as a double helix and the arrangement of bases.
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid
What is a gene?
Short strand of DNA located on a chromosome which codes for a particular characteristic in a species.
What is a chromosome?
A long strand of DNA located on the nucleus.
