Chromosomes, DNA and Nucleotides Flashcards
What are the base pairs
Nitrogenous bases held together by hydrogen bonds
- A T binds with 2 Hydrogen
- G C binds with 3 hydrogen
Define chromatin
DNA and the proteins and RNA needed to package DNA into cell nucleus
- loose - beads on a string
- tight - chromosome
Genome
Total genetic content of an organism
- in diploid organisms the DNA sequence of spine set of chromosomes
What is the difference between nucleoside and nucleotide
Both are nitrogenous base and pentode sugar but nucleotide is the only one with a phosphate
Define Nucleosome
Basic repeat unit of eukaryotic chromatin - a bead like structure formed by DNA wrapped around histones
What are;
Purine
Purimidine
Purine / two-ring nitrogenous base (G C)
Purimidines / one-ring nitrogenous base (C T U)
What is a base
Nitrogenous base is a component of nucleic acid involved in base pairing - guanine, adenine, thymine, cytosine and uracil
