Chromosomes and Mitosis Flashcards
1
Q
What are chromosomes?
A
They are coiled up legths of DNA molecules
2
Q
What is the stage of the cell cycle when the cell divides called?
A
Mitosis
3
Q
What are the two main stages of the cell cycle?
A
1.Growth & DNA Replication
2. Mitosis
4
Q
Explain the stage of growth & DNA replication in the cell cycle
A
- In a cell that’s not dividing, the DNA is all spread out in long strings
- Before it divides, the cell has to grow and increase the amount of subcellular structures e.g mitochondria and ribosomes
3.It then duplicates its DNA - so there’s one copy for each new cell. Forma X-shaped chromosomes. Each ‘arm’ is an exact duplicate of the other
5
Q
What’s the stage mitosis in the cell cycle?
A
- The chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell and cell fibres pull them apart. The two arms of each chromosome go to opposite ends of the cell
- Membranes from around each of the sets of cheomosomes. These become the nuclei of the two new cells - the nuclues has divided
- Lastly, the cytoplasm and cell membrane divide . The ce has now produced two new daughter cells. The daughter cells contain exactly the same DNA - they’re identical. Their DNA is identical to the parent cell.
