Chromosomal Basis of Heredity Flashcards
Where are chromosomes found?
Inside the nucleus
What do chromosomes contain?
A very long DNA molecule with thousands of genes
How do prokaryotic chromosomes differ from eukaryotic chromosomes?
Prokaryotic chromosomes are single and circular, while eukaryotic chromosomes are many and linear
What is the structure of prokaryotic chromosomes?
Made only of DNA and found in the cytoplasm
What is the structure of eukaryotic chromosomes?
Made of chromatin, found in a nucleus
What happens to chromosomes during prokaryotic cell division?
Copies its chromosome and divides immediately afterwards
What happens to chromosomes during eukaryotic cell division?
Copies chromosomes, then the cell grows, then goes through mitosis
When can chromosomes in eukaryotes be seen?
Condensed and visible during cell division
What are sister chromatids?
Identical copies joined by a centromere
What is the function of the centromere?
Where the kinetochore attaches for spindle fibers during mitosis and meiosis
What are telomeres?
GT rich repetitive sequences at the ends of chromosomes
What happens to telomere length with age?
Telomere length shortens
What is the chromosome number like in somatic cells?
Constant for each cell in the body
What is the sequence of events in eukaryotic cell division?
Nucleus divides (mitosis) followed by cytoplasm division (cytokinesis)
What is the outcome of mitosis?
Production of two identical daughter cells from a single parent cell
What is the outcome of meiosis?
Production of germ (sex) cells and halves the number of chromosomes
What is crossing-over?
Exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes during meiosis
What is random assortment?
Process where chromosomes are distributed randomly into gametes during meiosis
What is the chance of having a girl or boy from fertilization?
50% chance of a girl and 50% chance of a boy
What determines the sex in mammals?
Presence of Y-chromosome indicates maleness
What are sex chromosomes?
Chromosomes that determine the sex of an organism
Define homogametic sex.
Sex with two identical sex chromosomes (e.g., female XX)
Define heterogametic sex.
Sex with two different sex chromosomes (e.g., male XY)
What is the chromosomal difference in birds for sex determination?
Female has ZW and male has ZZ
In grasshoppers, what is the chromosomal setup for sex determination?
Female has XX and male has Xo
